Abstract

Engineering systems are pervasively subject to uncertainty arising from material variability, environmental loading, manufacturing tolerances, measurement error, and human factors. Probability theory provides the rigorous mathematical language through which such uncertainty can be quantified, propagated, and managed in design and operation. This review synthesizes the theoretical foundations of probability as applied within engineering mathematics, spanning axiomatic probability, random variables and their distributions, and stochastic processes, before examining their translation into engineering practice through reliability analysis, queueing and signal models, and statistical inference. The review further surveys applications in risk assessment, structural reliability, quality control, and communication systems, and critically examines the computational and practical barriers that limit the adoption of probabilistic methods, including the curse of dimensionality, data scarcity, model validation difficulties, and the challenge of interpretability. Particular attention is given to the convergence of classical probability theory with modern data-driven paradigms, including Bayesian engineering design, probabilistic machine learning, and uncertainty quantification in digital twins. The review concludes that while the mathematical foundations of probability in engineering are mature, the frontier lies in scalable computational methods and the principled integration of probabilistic reasoning with data-driven models, positioning probability theory as an increasingly central pillar of resilient and adaptive engineering design.
